Levon Helm 'In Last Stages Of Cancer,' Family Asks For Prayers
Levon Helm, the singer and drummer of The Band is in "the final stages of cancer," the Wall Street Journal have reported. Levon's family have released a statement informing his fans of his current condition, asking for them to pray for him, as he approaches the end of his battle with the disease. He was first diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1990s and underwent radiation treatment, which damaged his vocal cords.
The family's statement read "Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey. Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration. he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage. We appreciate all the love and support and concern."
Earlier this month, Levon was forced to cancel performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and the Midnight Ramble Show in Woodstock, New York, due to ill health. The Band regularly performed with Bob Dylan and were the feature of Martin Scorsese's legendary documentary The Last Waltz. He has also been a member of former Beatles member Ringo Starr's supporting cast.
