Les Miserables Trailer: Did They Fix Anne Hathaway's Singing?

The first trailer for Tom Hooper's movie adaptation of 'Les Miserables' has been released, featuring Anne Hathaway singing the classic musical song 'I Dreamed a Dream'. The stripped down version of the track certainly sounds better than it did in an unauthorized trailer that leaked online several weeks ago, which was taken down after Hathaway received heavy criticism for her vocals.

According to USA Today, Hooper has requested that his actors sing live on-set without lip-synching, though Hathaway's latest version sounds much improved. The actress plays Fatine in Universal Pictures adaptation of the musical, with stars Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman also making appearances in the trailer. The short clip features imagery of the French countryside, as well as the poverty and hopelessness of life there. The musical is based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, about a paroled prisoner who takes in Fatine's illegitimate daughter and raises her as his own. At the same time, his freedom is threatened when Inspector Javert (Crowe) attempts to send him back to prison. Though musicals turned into movies can sometimes go horrible wrong (Phantom of the Opera, anyone?), Hooper's version of Les Miserables certainly looks promising on the evidence of the trailer.

With the movie set to open in theaters on December 14, 2012, it's likely that 'Les Miserables' will be a favorite come awards season 2013, especially at the Oscars.
