John Mayall - Lee Rocker Plans 50th Around Guitar Greats
Former Stray Cats star Lee Rocker is hoping to celebrate his upcoming 50th birthday early at the Topanga Days festival in California in May (11) by taking the stage with blues great John Mayall.
The bass player hits the landmark in August (11) and admits it would be great to celebrate early by adding former Bluesbreakers leader Mayall to the collection of guitar greats he's had the pleasure of performing and recording with.
He tells WENN, "I've known John over the years and it has been way too long since we've seen each other but I'm a huge fan. He has launched some of the greatest musicians.
"I'm a blues fan from way back; that's how I discovered rockabilly... Hopefully I'll get John up onstage."
And Rocker has two other birthday wishes - he'd like to work with his hero Bob Dylan and reteam with Jeff Beck for his upcoming project with Rod Stewart.
He adds, "I know Jeff to a certain degree. I got together with him a bunch of years ago when he was starting to play around with some rockabilly stuff. I played bass for him on a few things, but I don't think it was ever released... He's amazing. I should track him down again.
"I've been so lucky and so forth with who I've gotten to play with from Carl Perkins and Willie Nelson and Keith Richards and George Harrison, but I would say that the person that stands out that I would love to play some bass for is Dylan. I've not had that chance."
