Lawyer Says Murdoch Told "A Shameful Lie"

27 April 2012
Saying that Rupert Murdoch's reference on Thursday to a lawyer at the now defunct News of the World taking charge of a cover-up of the newspaper's telephone hacking "can only refer to me," Tom Crone has denounced the allegation as "a shameful lie." Crone also came to the defense of the newspaper's former editor, Colin Myler, whom Murdoch also accused of engineering the cover up. "It is perhaps no coincidence that the two people he has identified in relation to his cover-up allegations are the same two people who pointed out that his son's evidence to the parliamentary select committee last year was inaccurate," Crone said in a statement. James Murdoch had maintained that Crone and Myler had failed to inform him that hacking at the newspaper went beyond a single "rogue reporter," which was the stance that the newspaper had officially taken until a series of articles by The Guardian and The New York Times revealed otherwise. Crone's statement was supported by the NoW 's former chief reporter, Neville Thurlbeck."Tom has never forbidden me from speaking to anyone at News International. Nor has he, to my knowledge, forbidden anyone from doing so either," Thurlbeck said on his blog. He has previously claimed that he has evidence that an unnamed senior executive of News International had directed the hacking scheme and that he was blocked from bringing his evidence to Myler, former News International CEO Rebekah Brooks, and former NI Chairman James Murdoch by the NoW 's managing editor, Bill Akass. Akass lists his current occupation as "editorial consultant at News International." He appears to be the only senior executive at the Sunday newspaper remaining on the company's payroll.
