Soul singer DENISE LASALLE returned to her native Mississippi on Wednesday (18Feb09) to be honoured by the state's lawmakers.
Legislators passed a resolution stating the star had made a "lasting impact" on rhythm and blues music.
The 69-year-old, whose hits include Trapped by a Thing Called Love and Down Home Blues, was joined at the event by R&B singer Dorothy Moore.
LaSalle told the Senate audience she was humbled by the tribute: "I can't hardly tell you how it makes me feel. I'm kind of choked up.
"When I left Mississippi, I left with tears in (my) eyes. But I'm so proud of Mississippi. Mississippi is my banner."
