Lady Gaga - Lady Gaga In Tears Over Japan Honour
Lady Gaga broke down in tears on Thursday (23Jun11) as she was honoured by officials in Japan for her efforts to boost tourism in the aftermath of the country's earthquake/tsunami disaster earlier this year (11).
The Poker Face hitmaker has helped aid efforts following the March (11) crisis by designing a special charity wristband and a T-shirt to raise money, while she has also been vocal in urging travellers not to avoid Japan.
Gaga is in the Far Eastern nation this week (beg20Jun11) as part of a promotional trip ahead of a planned performance at a benefit concert for disaster victims on Saturday (25Jun11), and she met with Hiroshi Mizohata, the commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency on Thursday (23Jun11).
The singer was handed a papier-mache doll which symbolises perseverance and courage, and given a special letter of gratitude from the Japanese government, thanking her for her support - and the emotional moment left Gaga in tears.
She wept as she told reporters in a press conference, "I would like to use my position here today and all week long to run around Tokyo and enjoy the beautiful city, and kiss all the beautiful little monsters (fans) and scream at the top of my lungs that everyone should visit this beautiful place."
She adds in an interview with the Associated Press, "I can't say enough to people all over the world that the majority of Japan right now, Japan in general, is very safe. It's fine to come here. It's beautiful."
During the junket Gaga drank from a special tea cup and saucer, emblazoned with the message 'Prayers for Japan' written in Japanese. The item will be put up for auction to raise money for charity.
