Labour Dispute Over Tony Awards Settled

10 June 2011
The 2011 Tony Awards will go ahead in New York without the threat of picketing after show producers and members of a stagehands' union settled a labour dispute on Friday (10Jun11).

Nominated stars including Al Pacino, Vanessa Redgrave, Ellen Barkin and Edie Falco are all expected to walk the red carpet at Sunday's (12Jun11) glitzy event at The Beacon Theatre, while performers include Daniel Radcliffe and U2 rockers Bono and The Edge with the Spider-Man musical cast.

Representatives for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees had vowed to stage a noisy protest outside the venue to demonstrate against the loss of a staffing contract relating to the event, potentially causing a big upset on Broadway's biggest night of the year.

But the two parties managed to reach an agreement on Friday afternoon, just two days before the red carpet is due to be rolled out, and union workers have now been handed back their contract to staff the venue.

In a joint statement, they say, "Both labour and management are satisfied with the terms and conditions of the agreement, which will not be publicly disclosed.

"The red carpet staging area for this and future Tony Award shows at the Beacon Theater will be staffed by union labour."
