How to Train Your Dragon 2 4278892 Film Reviews

Bigger and even richer than the terrific 2010 hit animation, this sequel is also quite possibly the best action-adventure movie of the year. Not only are its big set-pieces thrillingly rendered with first-rate special effects, but the characters are complex and involving. And the script effortlessly combines jagged wit, youthful exuberance, heart-stopping romance and even some rather bleak emotions.

Five years have passed since Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) discovered his ability to interact with dragons, specifically his inseparable pal Toothless, bringing a new era of dragon-related fun to the small Viking island of Berk. But now his father Stoick (Gerard Butler) is talking about passing on the mantel of chief to Hiccup, and he's not sure he's ready for that. He'd much rather be out zooming over the ocean exploring uncharted lands. Then on one of his trips he encounters a group of dragon hunters led by Eret (Kit Harington), who is helping the notorious villain Drago (Djimon Hounsou) build an army. But this leads Hiccup to an even more startling discovery: his mother Valka (Cate Blanchett) turns out to be alive and running a secret sanctuary for dragons. Can they team up to stop Drago?

It's a rare film that manages to work equally well in the quiet moments as in the massive spectacle, but writer-director Dean DeBlois never wobbles at all. Without ever manipulating the audience, he seamlessly shifts from tear-inducing happiness to soaringly thrilling battle action to agonising emotional pain. The coming-of-age plot may feel familiar, but it's packed with fresh touches, hilarious observations and some surprising twists and turns along the way.

And for a film designed to look a bit cartoonish, it's eerily realistic thanks to ground-breaking animation that adds uncanny details to every scene. The 3D work pulls the audience into the story, especially in the goosebump-inducing airborne sequences. And the animators add small details as well, from the texture of skin and scales to the smallest mannerism. These characters are visually bursting with life and energy, and their personalities are even more vivid due to the lively vocal performances.

But beyond the technical achievement, this is a hugely resonant story of a young guy working out who he's going to be. Hiccup knows his father is a tough-guy leader, and now he discovers that his mother is a sensitive dragon-whisperer, but he needs to figure out who he is beyond who they want him to be. And this gives the film an unusually strong message about refusing to live up to expectations. Which of course a filmmaker working on a sequel knows something about.

Maggie and Milo are a twin brother and sister who have been living apart for ten years. Milo has been desperately trying to follow his Hollywood dream of stardom, while Maggie is struggling to keep hold of her marriage to Lance. The pair are reunited expectedly after both narrowly avoiding a fatal accident on exactly the same day, and Maggie offers Milo a place to stay. Their relationship is rocky at best, but it soon becomes clear that they need each other's guidance if they want to overcome their troubles; Maggie can't bring herself to tell Lance that she's not ready for the baby they've been trying to conceive, and Milo simply can't let go of a past heartbreak. Can these twins reconnect and fix each other, or is it too late to work things out?

'The Skeleton Twins' is a heart-warming drama packed with hilarity and hope. Directed by Craig Johnson ('True Adolescents') and co-written by BAFTA nominee Mark Heyman ('Black Swan'), the movie won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, while also being nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and Edinburgh International Film Festival's Audience Award. It is due to hit US theaters on September 19th 2014.

Not Just A ‘Bridesmaid’: Our 10 Favorite Kristen Wiig Movies 4245578 News

The news that Kristen Wiig is writing a new movie with Annie Mumolo seems long overdue. The pair, who wrote Bridesmaids together in 2011 are set to team up again for a new film which will also be Wiig's directorial debut. There’s no word yet on any plot details but we can imagine it’ll be sarcastic, gross in places and very very funny. But while we wait for Kristen to come back to the big screen we’ve dug up our 10 favourite film performances from the SNL alumni that prove she really is the funniest woman in all of Hollywood.

Kristen wiigMore than just a Bridesmaid Kristen Wiig

1. Bridesmaids

Written by Wiig and Annie Mumolo, Bridesmaids was the movie that brought the former SNL-er to mainstream attention. Grossing over $288million worldwide, Bridesmaids has inspired a whole new genre of female centred comedies which aren’t afraid to be as crude as the boys. Still none have yet managed to captured the magic of Wiig and Mumolo's writing.

2. Knocked Up

In this Apatow comedy, Kristen makes the most of a small role as the passive aggressive, bitchy Jill, who asks Katherine Heigl's character to lose weight (without ever really saying it).

3. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Steve Carell’s Brick finally finds love with curly haired Chani, played by Wiig. Alongside comedy heavyweights like Ferrell and Carell, Wiig manages to hold her own proving a valuable addition to the Anchorman cast on their second outing.

4. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Kristen stars as the love interest of John C. Riley’s in this spoof of the music biopic. Lampooning music legends and their life stories on screen, Wiig shines alongside Riley, who gives a memorable comedic performance.

5. How to Train Your Dragon

Wiig lends her voice to this successful animation playing a foul tempered twin alongside T.J. Miller. She's also back in just released sequel which amazingly is even better than the original.

6. Despicable Me

Another successful animated franchise which boast Wiig as a cast member is Despicable Me, where she lends her voice to Miss Hattie, the domineering girls home owner who's not all that she seems to the outside world.

7. Paul

Adding some Hollywood star power to this Simon Pegg and Nick Frost sci-fi comedy, Wiig gives a fantastic performance as ugly duckling Ruth, who somehow finds herself caught up in the two boy's alien smuggling adventure.

8. Hateship Loveship

Wiig takes a job as Nick Nolte’s housekeeper in this comedy drama released earlier this year. While it wasn't’ a hit at the box office, Wiig’s performance makes it a worthwhile watch.

9. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Wiig stars alongside Ben Stiller in this romantic comedy which divided the critics. It’s by no means the two leads best work but it’s still a watchable film whose heart is in the right place. .

10. Friends With Kids

This ensemble cast teamed Wiig once again with Bridesmaids co- stars Chris O’Dowd and Maya Rudolph. While it’s no Bridesmaids the talented cast come together to make the most of the script, making it an enjoyable watch if not ever so slightly disappointing.

Despite the critics being less than enamoured with The Other Woman, this weekend it stormed the US box office even managing to topple the mighty Captain America: The Winter Solider. So far the female driven comedy has, unsurprisingly, drawn both favourable and unfavourable comparisons with 2011’s breakout hit Bridesmaids. Like Bridesmaids, The Other Woman boast a strong female cast and pushes the male characters very much into the background. It was for that very reason that the success of Bridesmaids took a lot of people by surprise in 2011. Bridesmaids was funny and sometimes out right gross and audiences enjoyed the fact that for once, it was women delivering the laughs and also writing the script. The movie, written by Annie Mumolo and Kirsten Wig (who also took the lead role), ended its box office run having grossed over $288 million worldwide making it producer Judd Apatow’s most successful film to date.

Whilst The Other Woman certainly follows on from the precedent set by Bridesmaids, that women can use the exact same humour as men, critics have reacted to the two films very differently. Although audiences seem to be equally responsive, the critical reception to The Other Woman has been vastly less positive than the one Bridesmaids enjoyed three years earlier. Bridesmaids is considered critically acclaimed and holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s described as funny, warm and containing well written characters and enough clever gags to make it stand out. In contrast, The Other Woman, whose rating currently stands at a rotten 26%, is labeled as predictable and full of cheap gags. As Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times, The Other Woman is “dumb, lazy, clumsily assembled and unoriginal.”

Despite the detractors, if its opening weekend is anything to go by The Other Woman could end up equalling the success of Bridesmaids at the box office. Does that mean The Other Woman is the new Bridesmaids? In a word, no, really it’s just not good enough. But one thing that we can take from The Other Woman’s success is that there definitely is a market for female led comedies and Bridesmaids was definitely not a one off. Bridesmaids drew light on the fact that the female movie going audience is ready for more comedies which speak to them specifically, it broke new ground in the market but now something even more original needs to come along after to further boost the genre. The Other Woman is not that movie, it simply doesn't bring enough originality to the table. That said whatever the critical opinion is it’s clear what we need is more comedies led by women, but what would be even better is if we made them a bit smarter.

It's been five years since blacksmith apprentice Hiccup managed to end the battle between dragons and the Vikings of Berk alongside his pet fire-breather Toothless, and now the islanders are spending their time with a new sport: dragon racing. Hiccup and Toothless prefer to spend their own time exploration, however, but when a new adventure leads to them to an ice cave of wild dragons they find themselves facing a whole new threat. That's not the only surprise in store for Hiccup though, as now is also the time he meets his long lost mother; a fearless dragon expert. She teams up with Hiccup and his friends to face the insane villain Drago Bludvist, who wishes to have control over all the dragons in the land; between family reunions, a crazed tyrant and unruly baby dragons, Hiccup has a lot on his plate in his latest adventure.

The sequel to 2010's 'How To Train Your Dragon' is set for release this summer as the second instalment of the animated trilogy. It is based on the book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell and sees the return of Oscar nominated director and writer Dean DeBlois ('Lilo & Stitch', 'Mulan'). 'How To Train Your Dragon 2' will hit the UK on July 4th 2014.
