The song features vocals from New Zealand's Connan Mockasin.
Kirin J Callinan is coming with his eagerly anticipated second album soon enough, and with just a taster in the form of his latest single 'The Teacher', we can honestly say it's going to be one of the most exciting releases of the new year.
Kirin J Callinan is coming with his second album
The eccentric Australian singer and instrumentalist, formerly of Sydney band Mercy Arms, is known for his experimental sounds and unique delivery, but 'The Teacher' featuring his friend and collaborator Connan Mockasin truly is something else. Released last month, this - the lead single from his upcoming sophomore album - is a nostalgic look back at teen angst; finding love for the first time and, indeed, conflict with the education system.
At six and a half minutes long, it's a tune of many personalities in its slow-building crescendo. It begins with a certain lo-fi dreaminess, combined with classic piano backing and morose, echoing vocals, but it soon builds into a percussion heavy beast of a song, maintaining those gorgeous ivories and adding in a sax which in itself turns it into a bluesy, rock n roll number. The magnificent vocals are those of New Zealand psychedelic pop singer Connan Mockasin, with whom Callinan toured last year following the release of his debut 'Embracism'.
As well as Mockasin, 'The Teacher' also features appearances from Callinan's backing band (made up of John Kirby, Dave Jenkins Jr. and Tex Crick), and has been produced by London-based Aaron Cupples who has previously worked alongside the likes of The Vaccines, The Drones, Miles Kane and Broken Social Scene.

2015 has so far been a busy year for Callinan. He supported TV On The Radio and Tame Impala on the road, and even played alongside Mark Ronson and Impala's Kevin Parker at the Triple J studios. What's more, he successfully sold-out a series of shows at New York's CMJ and headlined his own gig at The Waiting Room in London. While last year saw him appear at SXSW, this year he got to perform at Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris.
So what's next for Kirin J Callinan? Well, apart from his upcoming album, he's set to be a part of the 'David Lynch: In Dreams Revisited' European tour in November alongside Savages' Jehnny Beth, Bad Seeds' Mick Harvey and Stealing Sheep.
His second album is due to be released in 2016 through Terrible Records and XL Recordings.
