Thousands of mourners took to the streets of North Korea as their controversial leader Kim Jong-IL's funeral got underway on Wednesday (28Dec11).
The communist leader passed away on a train after reportedly suffering a heart attack while visiting an area outside the capital city of Pyongyang on 17 December (11).
A massive procession took place on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's (29Dec11) memorial service, with thousands of mourners screaming and crying as their former leader's body was driven through the city in a hearse on a 40-kilometre (25-mile) journey.
A military band performed the national anthem at the end of the procession, before rifles were shot into the air 21 times to mark his death.
