Washington has been nominated for the Primetime Emmys in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The drama series in question is ABC's Scandal. Washington plays Olivia Pope, head of a crisis management firm, who works with the US government covering up various indiscretions. The show has had two successful seasons and is currently filming the third. Washington will return to our screens for season 3 of Scandal on Thursday 3rd October.

She was, according to People, at an airport in Northern California when she received the Emmy nomination news. She said she was delaying celebrations until today (Friday 19th July) as she is seeing the rest of the Scandal cast. The show received another nomination for Dan Bucatinsky, in his guest starring role.

Washington has another reason to celebrate as she secretly married Nnamdi Asomugha in June. She remained tight-lipped in her interview about her relationship with the NFL player saying "I don't talk about my personal life in the press, but I will say I'm really happy".

Washington, despite her success, appears modest and truly grateful was her nomination. She said "I'm the luckiest broad in showbiz" and continued to say she felt "blessed" and "humbled" for the nomination.

In addition to her television work, Washington has also appeared in a number of feature films including Fantastic Four, The Last King of Scotland and Django Unchained

We will find out if Washington has won her Emmy Award on 22nd September, when the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will be held in L.A.
