Japanese filmmaker Kei Kumai has died in Tokyo. He was 76.
The award-winning director passed away in hospital on Wednesday morning (23May07) after collapsing at his home five days before (18May07).
Kumai was renowned for tackling social and political issues in his movies and won a Silver Berlin at the 1987 Berlin Film Festival for Umi to Dokuyaku (The Sea and Poison) and a Silver Lion at the 1989 Venice Film Festival for Sen no Rikyu (Death of a Tea Master).
Kumai is survived by his wife Akiko and daughter Mie.
