Kelly Rowland Airs Out 'Dirty Laundry' With New Song [Listen]
The singer has produced a daring and admirably personal song with The-Dream.
Kelly Rowland is back with a new single, but rather than release a throwaway pop jingle, the Destiny's Child singer has produced a number that is intensely personal; addressing a rocky former relationship and perhaps most interestingly of all, her jealousy towards fellow Destiny's Child member Beyoncé's major success.
The singer hooked up with producer The-Dream to pen the auto-biographical track, which is the first single from her upcoming album Talk A Good Game. It reveals how disheartened she was at constantly standing in the shadows of her mega-star best buddy, as well as admitting that while she watched on from afar she was also being beaten by an ex-hubby. Musically, the singer has returned to a more stripped down, R&B approach, abandoning the dance-orientated sound of previous singles such as 'When Love Takes Over' and 'Commander.'
Is Kelly Rowland ready to step out of Beyoncé's shadow?
In the song, she kicks things off by airing her beef with Bey, singing; "When my sister was onstage / killing it like a MF / I was enraged / feeling it like a MF.../Went our separate ways but I was happy that she was killing it / Bittersweet, she was up and I was down / No lie, I feel good for her but what do I do now?"
The song gets even more personal as it goes on, with the Rowland going on to discuss her physical torment in a past relationship, cautioning listeners that they “don’t know the half of this industry." We can't really post all of the lyrics from the song, considering they're pretty NSFW, but as she goes on to sing "Hitting the window like it was me / And still it shattered / He pulled me out and said, 'Don’t nobody love you but me / Not your mama / Not your daddy / and especially not Bey" its clear to see how much of a personal tone is kept in the song.
Talk a Good Game is due to be release June 18. You can listen to 'Dirty Laundry' here or stream it below (NSFW lyrics).
