Katie Holmes divorce from Tom Cruise has been finalized, without the need for a potentially messy slug-fest in court. Nevertheless, after the first and only round, it was the former Dawson's Creek actress who was named the clear winner.
With a prenuptial agreement governing the distribution of the couple's assets, talks between lawyers have focused mainly on the role of Scientology in the upbringing of their daughter Suri, according to the Los Angeles Times. It seems the Mission: Impossible actor has failed in his quest to have the 6-year-old raised under the tutorage of the controversial church, with Holmes given control of how her daughter will be educated. Raised as a Roman Catholic it's highly unlikely that she will allow Scientology to play a major role in Suri's life. Despite the ruling, Tom Cruise was "really pleased" with the quick divorce settlement, according to his long-time attorney Bert Fields. In a joint statement, Holmes and Cruise said, "We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents".
Holmes hired three law firms with experience of high profile breakups for the discussions, while also relying on her father Martin, an attorney who lists family law among his specialities. She married Cruise in 2006, in what was his third marriage, and her first.
