Kardashians Fake 911 Call: Are They The Latest Victims Of Swatting?
The Kardashian's fake 911 call over the weekend has aroused suspicions that the family may have been the latest victims of the so-called "swatting" hoax craze. Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said on Sunday (January 20, 2013) that it's too soon to tell whether a mystery caller intended to get specialized SWAT teams sent to the Kardashian home.
According to the Associated Press, deputies responded to the call Friday at a house in Malibu where the Kardashians formerly lived. After finding the house deserted, the deputies called the family and went to their new home about 20 miles away in Hidden Hills. No crime had been committed and no arrests were made. Kim Kardashian - who is pregnant with her first child - called the stunt "dangerous" and "not a joke," on Twitter, adding, "These prank calls are NOT funny!" Kim said her mother kris jenner was greeted by 15 officers at their doorstep.
Whitmore said sheriff's officials and other California law enforcement agencies will lobby state lawmakers to make "swatting" a felony. Actors Ashton Kutcher and Tom Cruise are among the celebrities to fall victim to the latest craze, with hoaxers using special technology that makes it appear that the 911 calls were made inside the homes where police are sent. "What we want to do is have the legislature turn up the heat on these people. This is a serious, serious crime," said Whitmore.
