Julian Fellowes - Julian Fellowes Talks 'Chaste' Romeo And Juliet

Julian Fellowes says the new version of 'Romeo and Juliet' will be chaste.

The 'Downton Abbey' creator has adapted William Shakespeare's classic tale of a pair of star crossed lovers for the big screen and rather than try to modernise the story, which stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, Julian insisted it reflected old fashioned values with the couple not consummating their relationship until they are married.

He told the Daily Mail newspaper: ''Love is life-shaping and moving. We did feel it would be nice to have romantic, married love, and that purity was an important part of the film. They don't make love until they have been married.

''One always sounds like 'Disgusted of Cheltenham' when you have these kind of discussions, but there is room for an understanding of the power of love.

''When we were discussing a love scene in the movie, one person said 'Oh, that's typical of today' and I responded that actually, Shakespeare wrote it. I'm not inventing it. It's there in the play.''

Julian also revealed he is an admirer of the 'Twilight Saga' movie franchise and feels it has shown youngsters what love it.

He added: ''We grew up on Rock Hudson, Deborah Kerr and Doris Day, and they had their way of being in love.

''And in a way, I feel the 'Twilight' teenagers have found their kind of romance and love and, though different, it seems to me that we forget love is the great mover of lives -- the Twilight teens are a great part of that.''

I'm looking forward to seeing this in the theater. If Miss Steinfeld does as well in this as she did in True Grit, she'll have me needing a Kleenex or two. I still haven't heard the release date yet, but hopefully it will come soon to a theater near me. It's good that it won't be overly sexualized. There's more to life and Love than Boobies and Butts. Sometimes it seems people have stopped realizing that. It's a shame, too.
