Judge Allows Colorado Shooter To Change Plea
A Colorado judge has accepted a plea by Colorado movie-theater shooter James Holmes of not guilty by reason of insanity. Holmes is accused of carrying weapons into a packed theater in Aurora, CO showing The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012, killing 12 and injuring 58. A jury must now decide whether Holmes was legally insane -- unable to distinguish right from wrong and unable to understand the consequences of his actions -- at the time of the shootings. Such defenses are rarely successful and would appear to be especially difficult for Holmes's attorneys to mount given evidence of their clients' careful planning of the theater assault.
