Kate Bush - Joyce Is Kate Bush's Lyricist
Kate Bush's latest album Director's Cut features lyrics from an unlikely source - late Irish novelist James Joyce.
The British singer first sought permission to use passages from Joyce's classic Ulysses for her 1989 song The Sensual World but her request was denied by his estate.
More than 20 years later, the Wuthering Heights hitmaker has finally been given the greenlight to use Joyce's words.
She says, "Originally when I wrote the song The Sensual World, I had used text from the end of Ulysses. When I asked for permission to use the text, I was refused, which was disappointing.
"I felt that the original idea had been more interesting (than my lyrics). Well, I'm not James Joyce, am I? When I came to work on this project, I thought I would ask for permission again, and this time they said yes... I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfil the original concept."
