Johnny Depp, "Pirates Of The Caribbean Paid For My Own Island"
Depp was speaking to Reuters UK about his new film 'The Rum Diary,' a film adaptation based on the book - also set in the Caribbean - written by his late friend and pioneering gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, however, he still found time to chat about the movie that he'll arguably be best remembered for. "The ultimate irony is that I was given an opportunity to do a pirate movie back in 2003 that even Disney thought was gonna crap out" explained the 48 year-old, adding, "That was the thing that allowed me to buy my dream, to buy the island - a pirate movie!"
The actor was in more poignant mood when describing his latest movie though, due for release in the U.S. on Friday October 28th 2011 and the UK on Monday November 4th. "It was his [Hunter's] idea to produce it as a film," he explained, "I found the manuscript (in his home). We were reading it, sitting cross-legged on the floor and he said, We have to make this into a film and produce it together. I said Sure, never knowing that we would full-on go through with it."
