John Wayne - John Wayne Speech Was Correct Says Michele Bachmann
John Wayne, the legendary western actor, was mentioned in a speech given by the potential presidential candidate Michele Bachmann on Monday (27th June 2011), but commentators were quick to question the historical accuracy of her comments. The 'Tea Party' favourite falsely claimed John Wayne hailed from her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, reports Cnn.
Confirming her plans to run for President, the Minnesota congresswoman said, "Well, what I want them to know is just like John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa, that's the kind of spirit I have too". The western actor who appeared in over 100 movies was actually from Winterset not Waterloo, and the only John Wayne to spend time in Bachman's hometown was the infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Discussing the gaffe on Cnn's 'American Morning', the congresswoman said, "People can make mistakes and I wish I could be perfect every time I say something, but I can't", however, the politician stuck by her comments about the actor, saying, "John Wayne's parents' first home was in Waterloo, Iowa, and he was from Iowa and of course the main point I was making are the sensibilities of John Wayne, which is patriotism, love of country, standing up for our nation".
John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa in 1907. His family soon moved to Palmdale, California, and then to Glendale, California in 1911.
