John Singleton Sues Paramount For $20 Million
Filmmaker John Singleton has filed a $20-million lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, claiming that the study backed out of a two-picture promise that was part of his deal with the studio for his 2005 film Hustle and Flow. In the suit, he claims that he agreed to sell the movie to Paramount at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 for $9 million because the studio had agreed to back two additional films provided their budgets didn't exceed $3.5 million each. But following Sundance, Singleton said in the lawsuit, Paramount added conditions that made the two other movies impossible to produce for the limited budgets. In a statement, Paramount said that it had hoped that Singleton would produce the two pictures "but that did not happen. ... Paramount fulfilled all of its obligations and his claims have absolutely no merit."
