Joe Jackson - Joe Jackson defends hitting Michael Jackson

Joe Jackson has defended hitting his son Michael.

The music manager was notoriously tough on his children growing up and was accused by Michael of beating him and his brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon, with a belt of with his hands if they messed up during Jackson 5 rehearsals.

The late King of Pop talked candidly about the effect his dad's physical abuse had on him and he accused Joe of destroying his childhood, but the Jackson family patriarch believes his strict rules were responsible for making Michael and his siblings stars.

In a frank interview on 'Piers Morgan Tonight', he revealed: ''I'm glad I was tough, because look what I came out with. I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right.

''There's no such thing as beating a kid. You whip them or punish them over something they did and they will remember that.

''I had to be like that way because during those times, it was hard, and you have a lot of gangs there, you know, in the area where we were living (Gary, Indiana).''

Michael - who died in 2009, aged 50 - famously spoke of his tormented childhood in a 2003 interview with Martin Bashir, revealing his disciplinarian father would ''tear you up if you missed a dance step''.

He explained: ''So not only were we practising, we were nervous rehearsing because he sat in the chair and he had this belt in his hand, and if you didn't do it the right way he would tear you up, really get you.''

The 84-year-old manager - who is still married to Michael's mother Katherine - insists his choice of discipline for his son was what made him a success and what taught him respect.

He added: ''You know, Michael, he was a nice guy. The world (doesn't) know anything too much about Michael as far as how he was brought up. But he was brought up. I made sure that he respected the older people.''

Violence is NOT discipline. Michael Jackson raised his children with NO violence, equally well-mannered, educated children, until they were with him. No one in his right mind would think it is fair to hit and abusing children in order to get them out of trubles. Only Joe Jackson and people like him, unfortunately there are.

Totally agree YANNI54. i brought up 5 kids and they were all disiplined when it was needed and they are now all grown up well adjusted and polite adults, none of them have ever been in trouble with the Police unlike a lot of kids today who have no respect for their elders and through the lack of disipline think they can do just what they like. Joe may have come down hard at times on his kids but as you said Michael was much more sensitive and affected more by it. Looking at the way they turned out proves that both Joe and Katherine ended up with offspring to be proud of.

Oh get off of Joe's back! In those days that is how parents disciplined their children, but you can bet that your children respected adults much more than these spoiled behind children of today! This man had nine children six of which were boys. The problem to me was Michael was just more timid than his brothers and his level of toleration was less. He may have not like the way his dad disciplined him and his brothers, but he understood why! He and his brothers still say they loved their dad very very much and they all are thankful because most of the people they grew up with as children are in jail or dead now. Joe kept his children out of trouble and he taught them total respect for others. Today's parents are so busy trying to be friends with their children, that these kids are cursing, fighting and some have even killed their parents. The psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapist (to sell books etc.) have told parents how to discipline their children and all we have now is chaos. It can be as simple as a disrespectful young kid to the complexed killer in Newton! What Joe probably did was to discipline all the children at the same level instead of considering their ages. But just like all other parents in those days, you whipped or punished them the same way and it didn't matter what their ages were, you just wanted the kid to learn and live!! Michael had his little issues (mainly when he became an adult), but he was the kindest, generous, thoughtful and loving individual that ever lived (so are his brothers and sisters) and we can thank Joe and Katherine for that!!
