Trite is still trite. The Master's writers didn't dare write this trite tired old story-line using Christianity because that would show up how completely shopworn the theme is. Using Scientology as the vehicle (scapegoat), the movie somehow escaped the sharp observation it deserved. Instead, its tedium received acclaim solely because good actors mouthed its words. This plodding plot--showing how a religious leader can mislead--has been done and redone since the 1930s in cinema, TV, even stage.
