Jk Rowling To Read Aloud From Harry Potter 'Prequel'

by | 04 December 2008

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is to read her new collection of fairytales to a group of schoolchildren on the day of the book's release.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a collection of wizarding fairy tales from the Harry Potter series, goes on sale today (December 4th) in support of a children's charity.

And Rowling will read aloud from one of the original seven hand-written copies of the book at a special event at Scotland's National Library in Edinburgh.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard played a pivotal role in the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, after Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore left a copy to Hermione Granger.

The volume of wizarding fairytales contained clues that would help Hermione, Ron Weasley and Harry in their bid to bring down Lord Voldemort.

All proceeds from sales of regular and collector's editions of the collection are to go to the Children's High Level Group (CHLG) charity.

Founded by Rowling, CHLG works to make life better for vulnerable children across Europe, providing over a million children and teenagers with food, shelter and crucial human or emotional contact and stimulation.

In celebration of Harry Potter's birthday on July 31st, CHLG announced earlier this year that The Tales of Beedle the Bard would be published with a £6.99 edition to feature additional commentary on each fairytale from Professor Dumbledore and an introduction by Rowling.

A handwritten copy of the book - one of only seven in existence at the time - sold at auction for £1.95 million last December.
