Jewish Groups Outraged By U.n. Screening Of Miral
A screening at the United Nations of The Weinstein Co.'s Miral , directed by Julian Schnabel, has been denounced by Israel's delegation to the U.N., the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, and other Jewish organizations as an effort to portray Israel as the villain in its dealings with the Arab world. The screening of the movie, which follows the struggles of a Palestinian orphan, played by Frieda Pinto, following Israel's 1948 war for independence. Prior to the screening, the American Jewish Committee denounced the decision to show "such a highly politicized, one-sided film in an institution devoted, according to its Charter, to peaceful conflict resolution and mutual understanding." Monday's screening went ahead as scheduled, however, and was attended by such celebrities as Josh Brolin, Dan Rather, Sean Penn and Robert De Niro. In an interview with today's (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times , Schnable, an American Jew, insisted, "I love the state of Israel. I believe in it, and my film is about preserving it, not hurting it. ... But if we don't listen to The Other Side, we can never have peace." In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harvey Weinstein, who is also an American Jew but who has acknowledged that the movie is "pro-Palestine," insisted, "The people who don't want you to see the movie for political reasons are crazy or wrong. ... If they see the movie ... they'll see something that's a pathway to peace and a beautiful coming-of-age story."
