Cliff Richard - Jet Harris' Manager Slams Sir Cliff

The manager of Jet Harris has slammed Sir Cliff Richard for failing to offer financial help to The Shadows star as he battled throat cancer.
The Summer Holiday hitmaker paid tribute to his former bassist after his death on Friday (18Mar11), but Peter Stockton has reportedly branded Sir Cliff a "b**ody hypocrite" following his words of condolence.
Harris' manager accuses the 70 year old of passing up the opportunity to cover bills for his pal's medical treatment and admits he's "very angry" about the apparent snub.
He tells Britain's Daily Mail, "This man is meant to be a born-again Christian and humanitarian, but he's just a b**ody hypocrite. Cliff was contacted 18 months ago, by a friend of Jet named Audrey, about Jet's cancer.
"She explained that Jet didn't have the necessary funds to get specialist treatment and wondered if Cliff might be able to be of assistance in some way or other. It wasn't a direct request for cash although I suppose the intimation was there... Audrey just got a letter back saying something like, 'I'm sorry to hear about Jet, I suggest that he contact the MACmillan cancer (charity) people for help.' It wasn't even signed by Cliff, but instead by someone in his office, which is absolutely disgusting.
"If Jet had had specialist treatment straight away, there could well have been a different outcome, but he couldn't afford it... though Cliff certainly could. Why didn't Cliff offer Jet something? It was like kicking a man when he's down. I feel very, very angry about the sequence of events. How Cliff can sleep at night is beyond my comprehension."
And Stockton also claims Harris was sad at not being included in The Shadows' 50th anniversary tour in 2009.
He adds, "Jet was very upset and disappointed not to be invited on the 50th anniversary tour. He said to me many times: 'Why can't they just offer me a cameo spot?'."

Sorry to hear of the loss of Jet Harris, but upset by the outburst from you . jet was with the Shaddows for a very short time , and , if Cliff supported everyone he knows , he would be forever dipping into his pocket. It has absoluteley nothing to do with being a Christian. Hope you can forgive and move on . Carole .N. Wales

I would disagree with the previous statement of Jet only being with the Shads for a very short time. It was long enough for him to be included on literally all of their important earlier works, which is where their name still echoes in instrumentals like Apache, Wonderful Land, FBI ,etc, et,c. I have all the early original music tabs and The Shadows Books 1,2,3,and 4 all show Jet - Get to number 6 and he have been replaced. He was there I restate for their most famous numbers. As for C.R., well if I though for one moment I was being wrongly slated the first thing I would do is go public - so where is his "Christian" statement of truth?

Sad to hear that maybe Jet's life could have been saved by having earlier treatment.

I wonder sometimes whether Cliff was even told about this, the Cliff Richard Org. may have taken things into their own hands, thats what their there for. Did Jets friends follow up on there suggestion by going to the charity they suggested? as that is probably one of the MANY charities Cliff gives too.Just MAYBE, they did not ask Jet to be in the 5oth Anniversary because they heard of his ill health. To The Manager, did you enqire about Jet performing in the show? you are his manager after all?I am very sorry to here about Jet, I am just a fan of Cliff and the Shadows from 1958 and I send Gods Blessings to all his family and Friends .

Hard to believe Cliff would not help Jet. Looks like Cliff's office handled this matter without consulting Cliff himself.I was also disappointed that Jet Harris didn't get the honours he deserved in the 2009 Wolrd reunion tour. As Jet did appear (together with Tony Meehan) in the Event in 1989, when the Shadows were not present, I can only assume that it's Hank Marvin, not Cliff, who blocked the inclusion of Jet Harris.Sad to realise Jet has gone, as Tony Meehan before. They were true members of the early Drifters/Shadows line up. I've enjoyed seeing Jet regularly at, for instance, Cliff and the Shadows fan meetings, often playing with Shadows cover bands. He was a great bass player! Rest in peace Jet!

I would like to hear Sir Ciff's side of the story before we cast assumptions, personnally I think the office didn't pass on the letter (as stated the letter wasn't signed by Cliff himself) and as we all know Cliff is often out of the country. Again I have to wonder if Jet was up to the hectic demand that the concert tour would have put on him? ? ?
