Last night, when Jennifer Lawrence tripped up the stairs on the way to collect her Oscar, it was simply the icing on the cake, after several weeks of stumbles, bumbles, wardrobe malfunctions and unprofessional confessionals.

There are many reasons to love Jennifer Lawrence, the winner of last night’s Best Actress Oscar and although her swift path from teen movie star in The Hunger Games, to Oscar-winning actress, beating the likes of Meryl Streep and Jessica Chastain may seem a little unprecedented, we love her all the more for that. There have been a few hiccups on the path to Oscars glory, for sure, but it’s the slightly rough-around the edges, girl next door appeal that makes Jennifer Lawrence such an appealing proposition, in the modern day world of airbrushed superstars, media-trained to within an inch of their lives.

If you’re still a little uncertain as to why we love Jennifer Lawrence so much, here are just a few pointers from recent memory. The fact that she confessed to not reading her lines before a scene, or an audition was a big one for us. Lawrence doesn’t even try to fake a façade of professionalism but in an interview with Collider, revealed “I never actually read my lines until I show up… it started out as a lazy thing. And then, my friend was over and she was like, “What scene are you doing tomorrow?,” and I was like, “I don’t know. Is that bad? Is there a point in my career where I should start learning my lines for work?”

Then, of course, there was her Golden Globes acceptance speech, in which the 22 year-old dared to joke about beating the veteran (and highly respected) actress Meryl Streep to the prize. There may have been a backlash over Jen’s comments, from some super-serious folks, but we thought it was pretty funny. Acceptance speeches haven’t been a strong point for Lawrence, of late. The way she’s dealt with the sometimes embarrassing situations she’s faced, though, makes her a double winner in our eyes. Tripping up the stairs on the way to collect an Oscar is pretty much the most embarrassing thing that an actress can envision happening to her on Oscars night. It’s exactly what Lawrence did, though and she handled it with aplomb. “You’re only standing up because I fell and you feel bad,” she told the people who were, in fact, giving her a standing ovation.” She laughed the matter off, saying “That was embarrassing.”

Many others would have been too mortified to continue, but the girl who is quite happy being snapped flipping the bird to someone in her Oscars gown is obviously happy to have a little laugh at herself when she screws up the biggest moment of her career. Jennifer Lawrence, girl next door, we salute you.
