Jennifer Hudson To Guest Star In 'Smash' Musical Series

Jennifer Hudson will be appearing in the next series of NBC's musical drama 'Smash,' the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday (June 24, 2012). It's expected that the decision will be a boost both for Hudson herself and for the show. Fans of the academy-award winning actress and singer will be keen to see her get her career back on track. She has not worked extensively since a family drama rocked her progress back in 2008, when her former brother-in-law was convicted of murdering her mother, brother and nephew.

Hudson has made public appearances since that time; she performed a cover of Whitney Houston's biggest hit, 'I Will Always Love You' at the 2012 Grammy Awards, to mark the occasion of Whitney Houston's death the previous day. She has also acted as a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers in the last few years as well. Her appearance on 'Smash' will see her playing the role of Veronica Moore, a Tony-award winning stage actress. In an announcement about their new appointment, Nbc's head, Robet Greenblatt said "Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it."

The network will no doubt be hoping that Hudson inclusion in the cast list will help to boost ratings. Their attempts to rival Glee for popularity fell flat in its opening season. The premiere for season one was a huge success but the critics failed to get on board and ratings dropped steadily with each episode. Last season, the series had guest appearances from Uma Thurman and NICK JONAS.
