Jay-z: 'Clarkson And Third Eye Blind Was The Oddest Pairing Ever'
Rap superstar JAY-Z was overjoyed to share a stage with pop singer KELLY CLARKSON and rockers THIRD EYE BLIND at a concert in Arizona this week - because the diverse line-up defied race to cross music boundaries.
The Big Pimpin' hitmaker was one of the headliners at Wednesday's (29Apr09) University of Arizona gig, and he was proud to play to such a mixed crowd.
But Jay-Z only really thought about the significance of the show's line-up after he came off-stage - and he wishes he had used the opportunity to make more of a statement.
He writes on the RapRadar.com blog, "I performed at the University of Arizona, I had a ball! Through all the excitement and joking around... I missed out on the opportunity to say something important.
"On the show as well were Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson - I thought that to be the oddest pairing EVER but, soon realised, it's what I've always professed. There is NO such thing as BLACK music or WHITE music, only GOOD or BAD music.
"It's stupid cool to like things that are not like you, and that goes for outside of music. If you're an African American, you can have a Jewish friend..."
And Jay-Z, who has broken down genre boundaries by working with the likes of Coldplay and Linkin Park, is predicting more unlikely collaborations for his fellow artists: "I think concerts like this should happen more often - outside of the one or two festivals a year... I'm putting that into the universe. Next up, Taylor Swift and (rapper) Uncle Murda!"
