James McAvoy: 'X-Men character in dark place'

James McAvoy's Professor Charles Xavier will be in a ''dark place'' in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'.

The actor - who is set to reprise his role as the younger incarnation of the telekinetic superhero - has revealed that his character will be more troubled in the latest film, which will also see Sir Patrick Stewart return to the franchise as the older Professor X.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the premiere of his new movie 'Trance' in London's Leicester Square on Tuesday (19.03.13), he revealed: ''I'm doing 'X-Men' next, which is lighter [than 'Trance'] but Charles is going to be in a dark place, I think.

''It's fine, though. It's quite nice to be in a darker place for a little while.''

Although the film's plot has been shrouded in secrecy, McAvoy added: ''I can tell you it's set in the Seventies. So, flares and sideburns.''

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' - which will be directed by Bryan Singer and unite the casts of the original 'X-Men' trilogy' and 2011 prequel 'X-Men: First Class' - will centre on the theme of time travel as the older X-Men reach out to their younger 'First Class' incarnations to stop a future genocide of mutants.

The superhero adventure's A-list cast includes McAvoy, Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Omar Sy and Peter Dinklage.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' is due for release in 2014.
