Etta James - James' Husband To Remain Conservator
A judge in California has ruled Etta James' husband will remain the conservator of her estate following a legal challenge from her son.
The veteran singer is terminally ill and was admitted to hospital this week (beg19Dec11) as she continues her fight with leukaemia.
James' health crisis came to light earlier this year (11) after her husband of 41 years, Artis Mills, filed legal documents asking a judge to grant him control of $1 million (£666,666) of the star's finances.
He claimed the 73 year old had become too ill to oversee her own affairs, but the request was challenged by James' son, Donto, who alleged that in 2008, his mother asked for him to be handed power of attorney if she becomes incapacitated.
A judge in Riverside County, California has now ruled Mills can remain the conservator of his wife's estate so he can continue making financial and health decisions for his partner, and released $350,000 (£218,750) of her money to cover medical costs.
James has been receiving round-the-clock care at home, but Donto has revealed he asked for his mother to be admitted to a local hospital for a thorough check-up.
He tells the Los Angeles Times, "The only issue is my mother going into the hospital. I begged the doctors to do it this one time to make sure everything is OK... Mr. Mills' aim is to keep her alive as long as possible. That's my aim too."
