James Corden Shocked And Tearful At Tony Awards Win
No one seemed more surprised at James Corden's win at last night's Tony Awards than Corden himself (June 10, 2012). Nominated in the category entitled 'Best Performance By An Actor in a Leading Role In A Play,' Corden faced some seriously strong competition. Also nominated in the category were Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frank Langella, John Lithgow and James Earl Jones. With his emotions on full display, Corden took to the stage to accept the award, with visible disbelief, making a tearful dedication to his girlfriend.
The 33 year old British comic actor began by paying tribute to his fellow nominees, telling them "To be on a list with you was enough and holding this, it honestly just reminds me that there is no such thing as best. Honestly, I am overwhelmed." Then he began to make his impassioned speech about his girlfriend, frequently pausing as he choked with tears and joking "at least it's not hot in here, eh?" as he could be seen sweating in his dinner jacket. "My girlfriend Julia gave birth to our son five days before we started rehearsals," he told those gathered in the audience. "She is my baby mama and I can't wait to marry her. Seriously, I would not be holding this if it wasn't for her. She made me say 'us' instead of 'I' and 'we' instead of 'me', and I love her. Thank you very much."
Corden wasn't the only actor making a tearful acceptance speech last night though. Steve Kazee won for his performance in Once. He dedicated his award to his mother, who passed away on Easter Sunday this year.
