Jackass 3d Goes Into The Record Books

Although some box-office watchers had predicted that Jackass 3D would not meet studio estimates of a $50-million weekend, the movie came in right on the money, toppling The Social Network from the top of the heap after three weeks. It was the most ever earned by a movie opening in October; indeed it was the most ever earned by a movie opening in the two-month September-October period. The previous record was held by Scary Movie 3 , which opened in 2003 with $48.1 million. (The Jackass sequel's profits were enhanced by inflation and sweetened by the 3D surcharge.) The pranks-galore movie featuring Johnny Knoxville also bested the comedy thriller RED, starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren, which placed second with $22 million. The Social Network slipped to third place with $10.3 million, down just 29 percent from the previous weekend. Nevertheless, despite the solid performances of the box-office leaders, the overall take was 6.3 percent below the year-ago's finish. Revenue for the year, however, remains 3.2 percent above last year's -- all of the gains attributable to the overwhelming business for Avatar at the beginning of the year and the premium pricing for 3D films throughout the year.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date) 1, Jackass 3D , Paramount, $50,353,641, (New); 2. RED , Summit, $21,761,408, (New); 3. The Social Network , Sony, $10,317,395, 3 Wks., ($62,436,364); 4. Secretariat , Disney, $9,318,886, 2 Wks., ($27,332,941); 5. Life as We Know It , Warner Bros., $8,955,409, 2 Wks., ($28,620,147); 6. Legend of the Guardians The Owls of Ga'Hoole , Warner Bros., $4,228,236, 4 Wks., ($45,994,776); 7. The Town , Warner Bros., $3,977,006, 6 Wks., ($80,510,629); 8. My Soul to Take , Universal, $3,170,310, 5 Wks., ($11,915,595); 9. Easy A , Sony/Screen Gems, $2,633,456, 8 Wks., ($52,317,481); 10. Wall Street Money Never Sleeps , Fox, $2,363,166, 7 Wks., ($47,894,896).
