Israeli Arab singer MIRA AWAD has been urged to withdraw from representing her country in this year's (09) Eurovision Song Contest.
The Christian singer was chosen to represent Israel in the popular annual contest held in Moscow on 16 May (09) as part of a duet with Achinoam Nini, a Jewish Israeli, in what was supposed to bring a message of peace.
But Awad has now been urged to withdraw in protest at the ongoing military action in the Gaza Strip, according to Britain's The Times Newspaper.
A number of well-known Israeli and Palestinian artists and intellectuals have sent Awad an open letter, asking the singer not to take part in the ceremony as they believe it would give a wrong impression of harmony in the region.
The letter reads, "The Israeli government is sending the two of you to Moscow as part of its propaganda machine that is trying to create the appearance of Jewish-Arab 'co-existence' under which it carries out the daily massacre of Palestinian civilians.
"Israel would not be able to proceed with its war crimes without the support of the international community and the United States and European Union in particular."
