Tony Scott - Is 'Top Gun 2' Still Viable Without The Late, Great, Tony Scott?

Before Tony Scott 's tragic suicide on Sunday, he had been set to direct a sequel to the immensely popular Top Gun. The 1986 classic that starred a young Tom Cruise remains a cult favourite, and a return to the franchise was in the director's plans, the Los Angeles Times can reveal.
Production for the air-combat classic was previously earmarked for early next year, with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions hoping to release the film in 2014. It was said to be a major project for both companies. The original had set records and was a critical and commercial success story, with box office profits standing at $354 million worldwide, a staggering amount for the time. The success of Top Gun propelled Scott from well-known British director into Hollywood stardom, much like his brother and contemporary, Ridley Scott, who directed such classics as Alien and Blade Runner.
Scott himself was responsible for a number of seminal films, including Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, De Ja Vu and True Romance. Not to mention his more modern work with Enemy of the State and Man on Fire, the latter cementing his close working relationship with actor Denzel Washington. Whilst Hollywood mourns one of its adopted sons, the return of a classic film franchise lies in wait. A reunification between Cruise and Scott is something that Sunday's events render impossible, and whilst the late director never actually signed up for the project officially, plans were well underway to make the sequel a reality. Until now, the film has been written by Usual Suspects writer, Christopher MCQuarrie, but talks between all those involved will have to take place to discuss whether Top Gun 2 is still a viable project without its original director.
