Tom Cruise - Is Tom Cruise Really No.2 In Scientology Heirachy?
Tom Cruise is easily the world's most famous scientologist, though if recent remarks by Rupert Murdoch are to be believed, he could also hold a hugely powerful position in the religion too. The News Corp Ceo offered his opinion on the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce this week, labelling scientology "creepy" and "evil".
Reacting to reports that Cruise's scientology beliefs were a fundamental reason for the couple's divorce, Murdoch tweeted, "Scientology back in news.Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hierarchy". The 'Top Gun' star was known to have close ties with the organization, though his actual position could be higher than most would have assumed. Murdoch expanded, "Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people". Predictably, the Australian received a barrage of criticism for the remarks - possibly from scientologists - and later tweeted, "Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks. Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story". The New York Daily News ran a story this week about Katie Holmes reportedly fearing she was being watched by Scientologist spies. They also posted a photograph of a mysterious vehicle parked outside Holmes' apartment building, which police later asked to move on.
Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by L. Ron Hubbard in 1952. Celebrities such as Jason Lee, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley have generated publicity for the religion in recent years.
