Is 'Prometheus' Ridley Scott's 'Phantom Menace'?

'Prometheus', Ridley Scott's hugely anticipated 'prequel' to his classic 1979 movie 'Alien', has left critics severely divided ahead of its release in the United States on Friday (June 8, 2012).
Boasting an all-star cast including Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce and Idris Elba, the film follows a team of space explorers who discover a clue as to the origins of mankind. The movie has been showing in UK cinemas over the weekend, with British critics generally complimentary of the sci-fi epic. Kate Muir of The Times writes "In the end, the Prometheus plot is slightly bonkers, but forgivably so, because the characters are so well drawn. And there are enough slime bursts to make Ghostbusters look timid". Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph steered clear of making comparisons to Scott's 1979 classic, saying, "While it lacks Alien's ferocious simplicity and focus, Scott's determination to see his often loopy ideas through gives his film a single-minded vigour rarely found in pictures of this scale". However, Andrew Eaton-Lewis of The Scotsman wrote a scathing review of the film, which began, "Have you seen Prometheus yet? If the answer is no, stop reading now because I'm about to spoil it". In his piece, Eaton-Lewis suggests 'Prometheus' is Ridley Scott's 'The Phantom Menace' - the heavily criticized Star Wars movie that some critics and fans felt soured the entire franchise.
Earlier this week, the film's writer Damon Lindelof told the Hollywood Reporter that a sequel to the movie could be on the way, revealing that it would likely be called 'Paradise' - the original working title for Prometheus.
