Is Michael Fassbender The Right Man For 'Assassin's Creed'?
Jean-Julien Baronnet, of the French games company Ubisoft who created the series, said, "Michael Fassbender was our first choice", calling the actor "extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed". Fassbender first rose to prominence with the Irish political drama 'Hunger', in which he played Bobby Sands, though also starred in the critically acclaimed Fish Tank. His more commercial efforts have included Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' and 'X-Men: First Class', in which he played Magneto. Assassin's Creed is one of the biggest selling games of the past 10 years, having shifted 30 million copies worldwide. It depicts a family line of assassins and their conflict with the Knights Templar, which spans the Crusades and the Italian Renaissance - a forthcoming instalment is set during the American War of Independence. Alongside the historical fiction is a sci-fi element, following a modern-day barman named Desmond Miles, who is forced to travel through time.
An adaptation of Assassin's Creed certainly comes as a surprise, given that Ubisoft were stung by a flawed adaptation of their other hit game 'Prince of Persia'. The movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Sir Ben Kingsley was panned by critics and took around $335 million against a budget of $200 million. It is understood that Ubisoft regretted its lack of creative input in the movie.
