Indie Film Before Midnight Sells Most Tickets Per Theater
While most multiplexes were crowded with moviegoers waiting to see the latest blockbusters over the weekend, a handful of theaters were packed with fans wanting to take in Richard Linklater's independent film Before Midnight, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The film, which opened in two theaters in New York, two in Los Angeles and one in Austin, TX, collected an estimated $320,000 over the four-day holiday -- an average of $49,000 per theater, versus $32,810 per theater for Fast & Furious. The film, which received virtually unanimous positive reviews, will likely surpass the grosses for the first films of Linklater's Before trilogy, 1995's Before Sunrise and 2004's Before Sunset. The film is due to expand to about 100 theaters next weekend and to about 500 the following week.
