Indian Court Orders Gere's Arrest Following Protests
Richard Gere has defied an Indian judge who ordered his arrest Thursday for violating the country's laws on public indecency by swooping actress Shilpa Shetty in his arms and kissing her on the cheek during a televised AIDS charity event last week. The Jaipur judge called the act "highly sexually erotic" and said that it "transgressed all limits of vulgarity." Protests erupted throughout India following the incident, which Reuters said was sparked by "Hindu vigilante groups." But in an interview Thursday on Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Gere remarked, "There is a very small right-wing, very conservative political party in India and they are the moral police in India. ... They do this kind of thing quite often. ... It goes to a reputable court and it gets thrown out." Gere, a devout Buddhist, travels to India frequently to visit the Dalai Lama.
