Ian Gillan - Ian Gillan: 'I Love To Iron Clothes'
Rock icon Ian Gillan likes to iron clothes when he's songwriting because the "no-brainer" chore helps to wipe his mind clear of ideas and refresh his thoughts.
The Deep Purple star has always been a big fan of heavy metal on the ironing board ever since his mother taught him how to look after himself when he was a teenager - and now it's more of a simple pleasure than a task.
He tells Wenn, "I like to do no-brainer tasks, and ironing is one of them. I do ironing not only for myself but for everyone at home, everyone in the studio if they want it and if I run out of ironing to do I put everything back in the washing machine and get it out again clean, so I have some ironing to do.
"I also like sweeping the yard, basically doing chores and I let my mind wander. I like walking and hiking and many of the ideas for songs have germinated from this. There's a wonderful woodland, spiritual song I wrote in Undercliff in Lyme Regis (England) and I used to walk up there with my dog and always come back with an idea.
"I walk on the beach down here (in Portugal, where he now lives) for hours and hours and throw myself in the ocean and I always come back with a bunch of ideas."
