Hugh Laurie - Hugh Laurie: 'U.s. Move Gave Me Confidence To Become A Musician'

Actor Hugh Laurie has credited his move to the U.S. for giving him the confidence to chase his dream of singing the blues.

The British star relocated to America after landing the lead role in hit medical drama House and is convinced his Transatlantic change of address allowed him to play around with a new identity.

Laurie released his second album, Don't Let It Rain, on Monday (06May13) and admits he still struggles to accept the career transition as it has fulfilled a childhood dream.

He tells BBC Breakfast, "If I hadn't gone (to America) I maybe wouldn't have (released any music). America after all is how (blues) came to existence, it's a place of reinvention. It's a place where people carve out new identities.

"Without that period there I may not have had the confidence. When a man asks if you want to make a record, you have to take things like that, I had to seize it...

"I'm still grappling with (my musical career). It's been my dream, so when a dream comes true it takes a while to get your head around it... I'm sort of a 10 year old. I'm playing with musicians who have been doing this for decades. We've been touring the world, they've done it all. I'm still looking out the window going 'what are we doing now?' It's great to be 10 again."
