British actor Hugh Grant is calling for assisted suicide to be made legal in the U.K. so Britain's terminally ill can die with dignity.
The Notting Hill star is patron of Healthtalkonline.org, a charity and wellbeing website founded by assisted suicide campaigner Dr Ann MCPherson.
MCPherson died last week (ends29May11) after losing her battle with pancreatic cancer, and Grant has paid tribute to the doctor by backing her calls to make the practice legal in the U.K.
He tells Britain's The Independent newspaper, "She's (MCPherson) right on assisted dying. That seems to me like the dignified option. I don't know quite what she wanted in her last few weeks, but she was a great champion of the right to die in a dignified manner, which it seems she did. She was a tremendous force for good.
"If you are around someone who you love, who says they want to die, and they say enough's enough, you would look on that with great sympathy. A person who is compos mentis (of sound mind) should be allowed to die rather than be kept alive and in pain, and without having to go off to Switzerland (to die)."
Switzerland is one of the few countries in Europe where lawmakers have legalised assisted-suicide along with Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Currently in the U.K., a person faces up to 14 years in jail if they are convicted of helping another person kill themselves.
