How Heartache Inspired Lady Gaga's 'Marry The Night'

Lady GaGa has revealed how the heartache of being dropped from her first label Island Def Jam Records inspired her new video for 'Marry the Night'. The pop superstar unleashed the epic 13 minute video this week - her longest yet.

Marking her directorial debut, Marry the Night sees Gaga in various states of undress while dying her hair blue and walking amongst flaming cars. Despite now being arguably the biggest pop star in the world, Gaga, 25, was once dropped before releasing any material - an experience that inspired her latest video. Speaking to E! News, the singer explained, "It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow.It is my personal way of seeing things. If you give up after something like that, you were never destined to be an entertainer". The Born This Way star claims the video's dramatic nude scenes closely mirror how she reacted in real life having been told she was no longer wanted by Def Jam, saying, "Well, I was naked in real life when it happened. That's probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I've ever done. My directorial decision was for them to just f*cking roll the cameras, because I couldn't go in and out of the moment".

Devastated at being dropped from Def Jam, Gaga returned to her family home in New York, but later caught the attention of label Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records in 2007. She later struck a publishing deal with Sony/Atv Music Publishing and was hired to write songs for Britney Spears, New Kids On The Block, Fergie and the Pussycat Dolls. Singer-songwriter Akon reportedly recognised her vocal ability and brought it to the attention of Interscope Ceo Jimmy Lovine - and rest, as they say, is history.
