Hoffman: 'I Turned Down Close Encounters'

DUSTIN HOFFMAN rejected a leading role in STEVEN SPIELBERG's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND in the mid-1970s because he was uncomfortable with being a Hollywood superstar. The veteran actor star regularly turned down the chance to star in top movies because he didn't want to spend his career chasing the success of his 1967 breakthrough role in THE GRADUATE. He recalls, "I remember reading this script and sliding it across the table to my first wife. She said, 'Are you going to do it?' I said, 'No.' She said, 'Is it a good script?' I said, 'It's one of the best scripts I've ever read.' It was Close Encounters. "I thought I'd just be repeating myself from The Graduate. The honest answer is I was looking for reasons not to work. I had something psychologically that I had not worked out. I was just not comfortable with stardom."
