Hispanic News Network To Debut -- In English
ABC News, which until now has not had a presence on cable TV, is teaming up with Univision News to launch a 24-hour cable channel targeting Hispanics. It will be in English. "This exciting joint venture represents the latest Example of our long-term strategy to broaden the reach of ABC," Anne Sweeney, president of Disney/ABC Television Group, said in a statement. In a message to staff, ABC News President Ben Sherwood took note of the fact that the U.S. Hispanic economy as grown to $1 trillion, "but until now there's never been a network in English aimed at them." Isaac Lee, president, Univision News, said that the channel will "provide all audiences with a multi-platform current events perspective on the issues that matter most to Latinos. This is an important moment for journalism in the U.S. and for the U.S. Hispanic community." But ABC's affiliates, many of whom contribute coverage to the network, are not applauding the venture. In a statement, Bill Hoffman, ABC affiliates board chairman, said that the stations are "concerned" about the partnership. "Our goal is to promote and enhance the news product, the competitive performance, and brand of each affiliate's local newscasts, and our focus, in consultation with the affiliate membership, will be on the effect ABC News' partnership with Univision will have on that goal," Hoffman said.
