Hfpa Loses Golden Globes Suit Agains Dick Clark Productions

Where was Ricky Gervais when you really needed him? On Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lost its lawsuit against Dick Clark Productions, which, it claimed, had no right to peddle the Golden Globes awards show to NBC and negotiate a deal with the network without the its approval. DPA is widely credited with building the show into one of television's premier events. In his ruling Judge Howard Matz accepted DPA's interpretation of a 1993 agreement that gave DPA the right to produce the show as long as it remained on NBC. There was nothing in the contract that said that it needed to have HFPA's approval. (The HFPA said it could have negotiated a better deal with another network.) Judge Matz's ruling also scored the organization on other counts. He wrote "HFPA suffered from the absence of sound, business-like practices. It also lacked consistent leadership. It elected a President every year for a one year term, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. Some elections triggered bitter feelings. HFPA members have always been dedicated to the success of the Golden Globes Award Show. But they also succumbed to bouts of pronounced turmoil and personal feuds." The HFPA had no immediate comment on the ruling. DCP issued a statement saying that it looks "forward to working with the HFPA and NBC to nurture and expand the Golden Globes for years to come."
