Helena Bonham Carter Initially Denied Role In Dark Shadows By Partner Burton

Director Tim Burton initially refused to cast his longtime partner and frequent collaborator Helena Bonham Carter in new movie Dark Shadows - because he wanted the chance to work with other actresses.

The English star has played leading roles in many of Burton's films, including Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, and Corpse Bride, but she's also found great success outside of her creative union with the director with parts in The King's Speech and the Harry Potter franchise.

And Bonham Carter admits after years and years of working with Burton - the father of her two children - the filmmaker denied her a spot in his vampire revamp because he wanted to expand his horizons.

She tells Interview magazine, "At the beginning of the film, before casting, Tim said, 'I think we should take a break, because you get to work with all these other directors and I never get to work with other actors.' I said, 'Fine, absolutely understand it. Let's just be grown-up about it.'"

However, the actress ultimately landed the role of Dr. Julia Hoffman, an alcoholic psychiatrist - thanks to some convincing from her producer pal DICk Zanuck.

She continues, "And then DICk Zanuck - he's the most amazing man. He's 77, he's Daryl Zanuck's son, and he's produced flops, sensations - Jaws, The Sound of Music. I mean he's a legend. So DICk comes up to me and says, 'Have you read it?' And I said, 'Yeah, but he (Burton) doesn't want me to be in it.' He said, 'No, no. You're the doctor.'"

And the 45 year old insists she doesn't plan on parting ways with Burton anytime soon.

She adds, "And I think, 'Oh why do you work with him again?' but it makes sense for me. I've got two children with the man. It doesn't make any sense to be going around the other side of the world and doing some other thing. And also, it's Tim Burton. He's a genius. You can't turn him down just because you go out with him... It would be insane. It would be perverse. It would be positively wrong - and stupid."
