Helen Mirren's Animated Struggle

Dame Helen Mirren struggles with voiceovers.

The veteran actress voices a character in forthcoming animated movie 'Legend of the Guardians' and admits she struggled with it far more than she expected.

She said: "It's hard. I really admire the people who are very good at it. Americans are very good at animating voices. I don't know why. They have a freedom with them that we British actors find more difficult to get to. I try to do it as best I can. I'm playing the wicked, evil one. Of course, I'm British, what else?"

Despite her struggles, Helen, 64, is looking forward to seeing the finished movie because she has "no idea" what it will be like.

She added in an interview with Collider.com: "When you do a voice in an animated film, you don't see the finished product at all. You're not animating. You're not doing the voice on the finished product. You're doing the voice long before. In fact, they animate to your voice so you don't see it at all. I have no idea. That's going to be a surprise for me."

Blunt, Mirren or Winslet? Who Will Win Best Actress Oscar 2015? 4301413 News

The biggest night in the film award circuit is still seven months away. But everyone knows the Oscars never stay silent for long and the films that look likely to be in contention for one of those coveted gold statues are starting to make their mark. Britain has a good few contenders in amongst the Best Actress pack including Emily Blunt, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren.

Emily Blunt
Could Emily Blunt's talents be recognised in the Oscar 2015 nomination list?

Emily Blunt stars in Into the Woods, a musical fantasy adapted from the highly-acclaimed Tony-award winning Broadway musical by Steven Sondheim and James Lapine. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, it marks Disney’s first theatrical adaptation of a Broadway musical.

More: Why Is Kate Winslet's youngest son called Bear Blaze?

Set in an alternate world of various Grimm Tales, Blunt plays the baker’s wife, who learns she has been cursed childless by a witch and must delve deep into the woods to break the spell.

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren is obviously a home-grown favourite and is in with the top-tier contenders for the 2015 Oscar list for her turn in The Hundred-Foot Journey. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Richard C. Morais, Mirren plays Madame Mallory, an uptight chef in a French restaurant who struggles to adapt her cooking and her tastes to meet those of a traditional Indian family that move to her village.

Next page: could Kate Winslet win another Oscar?

Just as Ricky Gervais so cannily suggested in the episode of Extras she starred in, Kate Winslet won her only Academy Award for Best Actress after playing Hanna Schmitz in World War II romantic drama, The Reader. And it looks like her name is in the frame once more for A Little Chaos.

Kate Winslet
Will Kate Winslet win her second academy award for A Little Chaos?

Directed by Alan Rickman, A Little Chaos is a British period drama that charts the assignment of Kate Winslet’s character, Sabine De Barra, to construct the grand gardens at the Palace of Versailles.

Of course, there are still more competitors waiting in the wings to snatch the prize including Jennifer Lawrence for her role in Serena. With two academy award wins for two nominations (Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook and Best Supporting Actress for American Hustle), she’s not a candidate that will go away quietly.

The biggest contenders at this stage appear to be Amy Adams for Big Eyes, Jessica Chastain for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and Michelle Williams for Suite Francaise.

Marion Cotillard is also a big player, starring in two films full of Oscar promise, MacBeth and Two Days, One Night.

At the end of the night, film is likely to be the big winner because they’re so many impressive ones out there. But it would also be nice if in one of those winning films was an impressive British offering too.

Talking about upcoming restaurent drama 'The Hundred Foot Journey', producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, director Lasse Hallstrom and star Helen Mirren reveal their thoughts in a short featurette.

Helen reveals that within the clashing of two food cultures 'it's a feud that becomes a war - and no holds barred actually'.

Everything You Need To Know About Katie Holmes' New Movie 4242663 News

As the former wife of one of Hollywood’s most prolific and instantly recognisable screen icons, it is to be expected that Katie Holmes marriage to Tom Cruise will define much of her career for many years to come. What’s more, despite starring in such well-known and successful films as Batman Begins, Go and Phone Booth, she remains most well-known for her role as Joey Potter in the long-running series Dawson’s Creek.

Katie Holmes Attends Met GalaKatie Holmes is attempting to re-establish herself as an actress.

The series, which details the lives of four teenagers through their growing pangs and adolescent tribulations ran for six seasons and 128 episodes, leaving Katie’s turn as the character Joey Potter left burned onto the minds of much of the American public. So far, efforts to distance herself from the role have been largely unsuccessful but an upcoming slew of films sees Katie making her most concerted effort to redefine herself as a talented and versatile actress.

Holmes will continue to build her newfound acting prowess in a series of smaller features including the indie feature Miss Meadows, released earlier this year. Elsewhere, Days and Nights sees Katie taking the leading role alongside such highly revered Hollywood mainstays as Leon star Jean Reno and American Beauty actress Allison Janney. Inspired in part by Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, the film looks set to give Katie the chance to prove her worth after the actress suffered a blow in the form of the early closing of a Broadway play, Dead Accounts, which received universally lacklustre reviews from critics. Holmes performance was singled out by some as being particularly uninspired and audiences failed to show interest.

In a work that seems irrevocably more challenging than any role Holmes has taken up so far, she will star in the Paul Dalio feature Mania Days, which has just concluded production. Set against a backdrop of mental illness, the films centres upon two patients in a psychiatric hospital that begin a romance, shining a light on the various complexities of their respective conditions. It seems a brave move for Holmes, and shows that her confidence in taking parts outside of her standard oeuvre. However, it is yet to be seen whether Holmes has the capabilities for such a demanding role or whether it will come across as such a desperate attempt at divorcing herself from her standard characterisation as Cameron Diaz’s overly kooky turn in Being John Malkovich.

The Hundred Foot Journey 4196405 Videos 15th May 2014

The Hundred Foot Journey is a drama directed by Lasse Hallström (Dear John/Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and written by Steven Knight.

Based on the novel of the same name by Richard C. Morals, The Hundred-Foot Journey sees an Indian family start a new life in France, where they intend to open a family business in the form of a restaurant, however the top restaurant in the south of France is opposite the restaurant the family buy, owned by the fiercely competitive Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). This gives the family little chance of being successful, yet they persist with it exposing the French to food they won't have tasted before. When Mallory becomes aware of this, she bitterly attempts to slow down business for their restaurant, i.e. by making snide remarks about the restaurant to her customers. Over time though, the two restaurants become friends, with Mallory even offering Hassan (Manish Dayal) of the Indian family, a job at her restaurant. But how will his father (Om Puri) feel about this?

The film came about when producer Oprah Winfrey became a fan of the script, and encouraged Steven Spielberg to make an adaptation of the novel, who she knew from working with on The Color Purple. Spielberg searched for a director he thought would be good for the role and so he found Hallström, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his adaptation of The Cider House Rules, by John Irving.

Cate Blanchett really wanted to commemorate her Oscar win on Sunday, and what better more permanent way is there then getting yourself a tattoo? While we were a little surprised at the image of Cate getting tattooed she’s not the only celeb sporting some unlikely ink.

Cate Blanchett Oscars 2014Cate Blanchett went from the red carpet to a tattoo palour after her Oscar win

Firstly none other thank Dame Helen Mirren has gone under the tattoo needle. The actress sports some ink on her left thumb of all places. The Dame said she got it when she was very drunk, a long time ago before tattoos were cool and mainstream, which is why she hates it now. She told ‘Good Morning America’ back in 2010 "I was very, very drunk. It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell's Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners. And I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing." Seems Helen was always ahead of her time.

This next one might be the strangest celebrity tattoo of them all. Another unlikely candidate to take a trip to the tattoo palour is Mandy Moore, who sports a heart on the top of one her toes, however the other foot contains a small taft of a, ahem, ‘baby sperm’. The singer revealed in 2010 that she got it on tour after her and her band members were ‘were goofing off, writing a song about babies or something,” and then "somehow that evolved into everybody getting inked." That’s certainly one of the most interesting tattoos we’ve heard of.

Also going for a foot tattoo is Jennifer Aniston, who took a trip to the tattooist chair back in 2011 to commemorate her dog Norman, who had died that year. The tattoo bears the pup’s name and can be found on the inside of her right foot. Another actress using ink to commemorate is Sandra Bullock who has a tattoo in memory of her late mother above her heart. Sandra is probably no stranger to ink considering she was once married to the heavily tatted Jessie James.
