Former Radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening died after taking large quantities of cocaine, ecstasy and GHB, it has emerged.
The 44-year-old's body was found at an address in Wandsworth, London, on Saturday night and post-mortem results have suggested he suffered a heart attack.
Previously, the star's agent said Greening - who came out publicly as a homosexual in 1996 - had died peacefully in his sleep.
A 50-year-old man had been arrested in connection with a police inquiry into the breakfast show presenter's death and was questioned on suspicion of murder and supplying Class A drugs.
He was detained at the address where the popular disc jockey's body was found. While the murder claim was dropped, the unnamed man has been bailed until March pending further inquiries.
Greening was part of the launch line-up of Virgin Radio in 1993 and joined Radio 1 the following year. He co-hosted the station's flagship breakfast show with Zoe Ball from 1997 to 1998 before returning to a weekend hosting slot.
Radio 5 Live presenter Simon Mayo, who knew Greening from Radio 1, told listeners after Greening's death: "He had a very, very dry sense of humour and he was quite shy really, sometimes embarrassed about having achieved the level of fame that he did have.
"Anyone who listened to his programmes could tell he was extremely bright, extremely clever. If he had a 40-second voiceover for his first record he would probably put in eight, nine, ten little funny bits just to get the whole thing going.
"He was a fantastic example as to how much work should go into a programme. He was naturally gifted, and I frankly find it rather hard to believe that he's not with us any more."
And BBC Radio 5 Live broadcaster Nick Wallis said Greening was held in "very high regard" by "the entire industry".
"I enjoyed Kevin's unassuming manner, generous nature and warm, wry, friendly outlook on life. I'm shocked he's not going to be here any more," he said.
Greening also worked at Radio 5 Live, as well as London stations Jazz FM, Heart 106.2 and XFM.
The Californian rockers were defiant in their intention to play the venue once again.
